Gli avverbi inglesi: un punto chiave del TOEIC®
La distinzione tra aggettivo e avverbio rappresenta circa il 10% delle domande della Part 5 del TOEIC®. È un punto grammaticale in cui puoi guadagnare punti facilmente se padroneggi poche regole semplici: capire cosa viene modificato, riconoscere i suffissi e conoscere le eccezioni.
Decisione rapida: aggettivo o avverbio? (3 passaggi)
Quando sei indeciso tra un aggettivo e un avverbio nella Part 5, segui questi 3 passaggi:
- Individua la parola modificata: è un sostantivo? Usa un aggettivo. È un verbo, un aggettivo o un altro avverbio? Usa un avverbio.
- Attenzione ai verbi copulativi (linking verbs): dopo be, seem, appear, remain, become, usa un aggettivo, non un avverbio. The report seems accurate (non *accurately).
- Guarda la posizione: tra soggetto e verbo, o dopo un verbo d'azione? Avverbio. Prima di un sostantivo? Aggettivo.

Avverbi di modo (come?)
Gli avverbi di modo descrivono come viene svolta un'azione. Di solito si mettono dopo il verbo o dopo il complemento oggetto:

Si mettono prima del verbo principale ma dopo il verbo be:

Modificano un aggettivo o un altro avverbio e si mettono subito prima di esso:

Avverbi di frase (sentence adverbs)
Modificano l'intera frase e si mettono all'inizio, seguiti da una virgola. Molto frequenti al TOEIC® nelle email e nei report:

Regole di formazione degli avverbi
La maggior parte degli avverbi si forma aggiungendo -ly all'aggettivo, ma ci sono regole da conoscere:

8 coppie che si confondono (trappole frequenti al TOEIC®)
Queste coppie sono particolarmente insidiose perché aggiungere -ly cambia completamente il significato della parola:
