The 2 (school / the school etc.)
When to drop 'the' before places like school, hospital, prison, and work
The General Idea vs. a Specific Place
Some places have a “main purpose.” A school is for learning. A hospital is for treating patients. A prison is for holding prisoners. A church is for religious services.
When you talk about that main purpose, drop the. When you talk about the building itself — a specific physical place — use the.
| Without the (general purpose) | With the (specific building) |
|---|---|
| She goes to school every day. (= she is a student) | Her mother went to the school to talk to the teacher. (= she visited the building) |
| He was taken to hospital after the accident. (= as a patient) | I went to the hospital to visit a colleague. (= as a visitor) |
Think of it this way: the student, the patient, the prisoner — they don’t need the because they are using the place for its intended purpose. Everyone else — visitors, repair crews, inspectors — needs the because they are going to a specific building.
Places That Follow This Pattern
The same rule applies to school, prison (or jail), hospital, university, college, and church.
| Place | Without the | With the |
|---|---|---|
| school | Their children are at school right now. | Some parents were waiting outside the school. |
| university / college | After school, she wants to go to university. | I drove to the university to pick up a package. |
| hospital | He’s been in hospital since Monday. | She’s at the hospital visiting her manager. |
| prison | He’s in prison for fraud. | The inspector went to the prison to check conditions. |
| church | My colleague goes to church every Sunday. | The construction crew went to the church to fix the roof. |
For most other places, you always need the: the station, the airport, the office, the cinema.
bed, work, and home
Three more words follow a similar “no article” pattern, but each works slightly differently.
bed
Drop the when you talk about sleeping or resting — the normal reason people go to bed.
- I’m going to bed. Goodnight.
- Do you ever check your emails in bed?
Use the when you mean the physical piece of furniture.
- I sat down on the bed and opened my laptop.
work
Drop the for the activity of working. There is no article with work in these set phrases:
- *go to work*, *be at work*, *start work*, *finish work*
What time do you usually finish work? She didn’t go to work yesterday because she was sick.
home
Home needs no article and no preposition with movement verbs:
- *go home*, *come home*, *get home*, *arrive home*
Let’s go home — the meeting is over. I usually work at home on Fridays.
| Word | No article (general use) | With the (specific object/place) |
|---|---|---|
| bed | go to bed, be in bed | sit on the bed |
| work | go to work, finish work | — (not used with the in this sense) |
| home | go home, be at home | — (not used with the in this sense) |
