Complete TOEIC® Test Structure

The TOEIC® Listening and Reading test consists of 200 questions spread across 7 parts. The Listening section (Parts 1-4) lasts 45 minutes and the Reading section (Parts 5-7) lasts 75 minutes, for a total of 2 hours of testing. Each part assesses specific listening or reading compréhension skills.

Listening Section (45 minutes)

The Listening section is played once through an audio recording. You cannot go back or replay any passages. The 4 parts progress in difficulty.

Part 1: Photographs (6 questions)

You see a photo and hear 4 descriptions. You must choose the one that best describes the photo. This is the easiest part of the test, ideal for building confidence. Common traps include similar-sounding words and partially correct descriptions. See our Part 1 strategy guide to maximize your score.

Part 2: Question-Response (25 questions)

You hear a question followed by 3 possible responses. There is no visual support. This part tests your ability to understand direct and indirect questions in a professional context. Watch out for indirect responses that don't directly answer the question but are nonetheless correct.

Part 3: Conversations (39 questions)

You listen to conversations between 2 or 3 people, then answer 3 questions per conversation. Conversations cover professional situations: meetings, phone calls, discussions between colleagues. Some questions include a visual élément (table, chart, floor plan).

Part 4: Talks (30 questions)

You listen to monologues (announcements, voicemail messages, meeting excerpts) and answer 3 questions per talk. The format is similar to Part 3, but with a single speaker. Topics include public announcements, weather reports, instructions, and présentations.

Reading Section (75 minutes)

Unlike the Listening section, you manage your time freely in the Reading section. A good time management strategy is essential to complète all 100 questions. To practice, try our free TOEIC® exercises or take a full practice test.

Recommended Time Strategy

Part Recommended Time Time per Question
Part 510 minutes~20 seconds
Part 610 minutes~37 seconds
Part 755 minutes~1 minute

Part 5: Incomplete Sentences (30 questions)

Each question présents a sentence with a missing word and 4 answer choices. This part primarily tests grammar (verb tenses, agreement, parts of speech) and vocabulary. This is the part where you can save the most time by answering quickly through strong grammar knowledge. Check out our detailed Part 5 stratégies.

Part 6: Text Completion (16 questions)

You read short texts (emails, letters, announcements) with blanks to fill in. Each text has 4 questions. One of the questions asks you to insert a complète sentence into the text, which tests your understanding of the overall context.

Part 7: Reading Comprehension (54 questions)

This is the longest and most demanding part. You read single, double, or triple passages (emails, articles, forms, message exchanges) and answer compréhension questions. Double and triple passages require you to cross-référence information between multiple documents.
