The key points
Yes, you can take the TOEIC online: the TOEIC Listening & Reading is available in a remote-proctored version, from home. You get exactly the same official certificate as in a centre, and results often land within 3 to 5 hours. One confusion to clear up first: taking the real TOEIC remotely has nothing to do with a free practice test online.
Online TOEIC or free practice test?
This is the number-one misunderstanding, so let us clear it up first. Two very different things hide behind "TOEIC online":
- The official remote TOEIC: the real test, paid, proctored by ETS Global, which issues a recognised certificate. That is the subject of this page.
- A free practice test: a simulation to self-assess and train. No official score, no certificate, but an excellent way to gauge yourself before the exam.
If you just want to assess yourself without paying, take a free online TOEIC test to assess yourself or practise with our free TOEIC exercises. If you want the certification, read on.
The remote-proctored TOEIC: how it works
Taking the test remotely relies on webcam proctoring. You sit the test on your computer while a system, sometimes backed by a human proctor, monitors your environment in real time. Your smartphone usually acts as a second camera to film the room from another angle. Before starting, you show a valid ID and scan the room with your camera.
The format concerned is the TOEIC Listening & Reading (and, depending on the session, the 4-Skills format). The content and scoring are identical to a centre sitting: only the setting changes.
Who can take the TOEIC online?
Let us be honest about the rule, because it is often vague elsewhere. The remote-proctored sitting is mostly offered through an institution or training provider: universities, schools and approved centres that organise remote sessions for their candidates. An individual registering alone usually sits in a centre, or via an approved centre that explicitly offers the individual remote modality.
In other words: the remote version does exist, but access depends on who organises your session. Before committing, check the official ETS Global site and your provider for the modality actually available in your case.
Equipment and technical conditions
To take the TOEIC remotely under good conditions, plan for:
- a computer (not a tablet) with a working webcam;
- a stable internet connection, ideally wired;
- a charged smartphone, often used as a second camera;
- a quiet room, alone, well lit, with a clear desk;
- a valid ID for verification.
Anti-cheating rules are strict: no unauthorised second screen, no notes, no phone within reach (outside its camera role), face and hands visible. A clear environment and following the instructions are enough to pass verification stress-free.
Price and funding
The remote TOEIC is paid, in the same price range as a centre sitting. Depending on your country and situation, funding schemes may apply (in France, the CPF), usually within a course that includes preparation and the sitting. Amounts and conditions change: find the details in our guide on the TOEIC price and registration, and always confirm on the official site.
Test day flow and results
On the day, you connect early for check-in: identity verification, room scan, equipment check. Then comes the test itself, about 2 hours (Listening then Reading), with no break between the two sections. The major upside of remote testing: digital results often arrive within 3 to 5 hours. For everything on timelines and accessing your report, see our guide on TOEIC results in 3 to 5 hours. The full flow of a standard sitting is described in our guide on how the exam unfolds.
Online or in a centre: which to choose?
Remote testing is appealing for its flexibility, but it imposes technical constraints. Here is what you need to decide based on your situation.
| Criterion | Online (remote) | In a centre |
|---|---|---|
| Location | At home, quiet room | Approved ETS Global centre |
| Flexibility | Wider slots, no travel | Fixed sessions per centre |
| Equipment | Computer, webcam, smartphone, solid connection | Provided on site |
| Proctoring | Remote (webcam + second device) | Invigilator in the room |
| Score report | Same official certificate | Same official certificate |
| Results | Fast (often 3 to 5 hours) | Longer depending on format |
