Where to Start?

Before diving into intensive preparation, it is essential to lay the right foundation. Here are the three key steps to get started effectively.

1. Assess your current level. Take a free practice test to know your starting point. Without an initial assessment, you risk wasting time on skills you already have and neglecting your actual weaknesses.

2. Understand the test format. The TOEIC® has a very specific structure with 7 distinct parts. Check out our TOEIC® content guide to learn about each part in detail. Mastering the format gives you a considerable advantage on test day.

3. Set a target score. Your preparation will be very different depending on whether you are aiming for 600 or 900. Consult our guide on TOEIC® levels and scores to understand CEFR equivalences and identify the score you need.

Understanding the Test Format

The TOEIC® Listening and Reading consists of 200 questions across 7 parts, for a total duration of 2 hours. The Listening section (45 min) has 4 parts, and the Reading section (75 min) has 3 parts. Each section is scored out of 495 points, for a maximum total of 990 points.

For a detailed description of each part, see our complete TOEIC® content guide. To understand how your score is calculated, check our TOEIC® score conversion grid.

TOEIC® Preparation: The 3 Key Phases

Effective preparation follows a three-phase progressive plan. This method has been proven with thousands of test-takers and adapts to all starting levels.

Phase 1: Diagnostic (Weeks 1-2)

The first step is to understand precisely where you stand. Without a diagnostic, you risk working blindly.

  • Take a full practice test. Complete a free TOEIC® practice test under real conditions (timed, no breaks) to get a baseline score.
  • Identify your weaknesses by part. Analyze your results part by part. Where do you lose the most points? Listening or Reading? Grammar or vocabulary? This analysis will guide your entire preparation.
  • Set a realistic goal. Check our guide on TOEIC® levels and scores to define a target suited to your situation (studies, employment, promotion).

Phase 2: Targeted Training (Weeks 3-8)

This is the longest and most important phase. Focus your efforts on the weak points identified during the diagnostic.

  • Work on weak parts first. Dedicate 60% of your time to the parts where you lose the most points. For Listening strategies, see our Listening Part 1 strategies guide. For Reading, check our Part 5 strategies guide.
  • Strengthen your grammar. Grammar questions represent a significant portion of the Reading score. Review key structures: verb tenses, agreement, prepositions, relative pronouns.
  • Build your business vocabulary. Learn TOEIC® vocabulary by theme: finance, HR, marketing, logistics, communication. Aim for 10 new words per day with flashcards.
  • Do targeted exercises daily. Use free TOEIC® exercises to practice regularly and track your progress.

Phase 3: Simulation (Weeks 9-12)

The final weeks are dedicated to conditioning and optimizing your performance on test day.

  • Take timed practice tests. Complete at least one practice test per week under real conditions. Analyze each error and adjust your strategy.
  • Optimize your time management. Time yourself on each section. The goal is to finish Part 5 in 10 minutes, Part 6 in 10 minutes, and keep 55 minutes for Part 7.
  • Prepare the logistics. Learn about TOEIC® pricing and registration, locate your test center, and plan your route.

Strategies by Section

Listening Section (Parts 1-4)

The Listening section accounts for half your score. Here are the essential strategies to maximize your points:

  • Anticipate the answers. Read the questions and answer choices before listening to the audio. This technique is particularly effective for Parts 3 and 4. During the instructions at the beginning of each part, read ahead to the upcoming questions.
  • Focus on the first sentence. In Parts 3 and 4, the first sentence often sets the context (location, relationship between speakers, topic of conversation). Being attentive from the very first words immediately orients you.
  • Eliminate by deduction. If you are unsure of the correct answer, eliminate clearly wrong choices. Even eliminating just one option significantly increases your chances.
  • Don't get stuck. The audio doesn't stop. If you hesitate on a question, mark your best guess and move on. It is better to guess on one question than to miss three.

For detailed Part 1 strategies, check our Listening Part 1 strategies guide.

Reading Section (Parts 5-7)

Time management is the most critical factor in the Reading section. Here is the ideal time allocation:

Part Recommended Time Key Strategy
Part 5 (30 questions)10 minutes20 sec/question, identify question type (grammar or vocabulary)
Part 6 (16 questions)10 minutesRead the full text before answering, watch for insertion questions
Part 7 (54 questions)55 minutesRead questions first, then scan the text for answers (skimming)

Key strategies for the Reading section:

  • Part 5: be fast. These grammar and vocabulary questions should be answered in 20 seconds maximum. If you hesitate after 30 seconds, mark and move on. Every minute saved here is an extra minute for Part 7.
  • Part 6: read the context. Don't fill in blanks mechanically. Read the entire text to understand the tone and intent of the message.
  • Part 7: read the questions first. Before reading the passage, scan the questions to know what you are looking for. Use skimming to locate relevant information quickly.

Study Plan Based on Your Goal

The duration and intensity of your preparation depend directly on your target score. Here is a guide tailored to each milestone:

Goal Estimated Duration Pace Priorities
600 points2 months30 min/dayBasic grammar, common vocabulary, format familiarization
700 points2-3 months45 min/dayPart-specific strategies, business vocabulary, time management
800 points3-4 months1h/dayNuanced comprehension, vocabulary traps, speed reading
900+ points4-6 months1h30/dayMaximum accuracy, daily immersion, regular practice tests

Regardless of your goal, consistency matters more than intensity. It is better to practice 30 minutes every day than 3 hours on the weekend. To better understand score-level equivalences, see our guides on TOEIC® B2 level and TOEIC® C1 level. You can also check our comprehensive guide on TOEIC®-CEFR equivalences.

Key Business Vocabulary to Master

The TOEIC® evaluates your ability to understand English in a professional context. Business vocabulary represents an essential part of the test, particularly in Parts 5, 6, and 7. Here are the 5 key domains to master:

  • Finance: budget, revenue, profit, invoice, quarterly report, expenditure, forecast. These terms appear frequently in Part 7 texts (reports, financial memos).
  • Human Resources: hire, promote, resign, candidate, performance review, salary, benefits. HR vocabulary is ubiquitous in job postings and emails in Parts 6 and 7.
  • Marketing: campaign, target audience, launch, brand awareness, survey, advertisement, market share. Marketing conversations and texts are very common on the TOEIC®.
  • Logistics: shipment, warehouse, delivery, inventory, supply chain, customs, freight. Logistics situations appear in Parts 3, 4, and 7.
  • Business Communication: memo, agenda, minutes, conference call, deadline, follow up, reschedule. These terms are essential for understanding professional exchanges in Parts 3 and 4.

For a complete list of vocabulary to know, see our TOEIC® vocabulary guide. Use flashcards with spaced repetition to memorize these terms effectively.

The 5 Most Common Mistakes

After helping thousands of test-takers, here are the traps most TOEIC® candidates fall into:

  1. Not managing time. This is the number one mistake. Many candidates spend too much time on Parts 5 and 6 and run out of time for Part 7, which has 54 questions. Time yourself systematically during practice sessions.
  2. Neglecting Listening. Listening accounts for half the score, yet many candidates focus only on Reading because they feel more comfortable with it. Listen to English daily: podcasts, shows, news.
  3. Cramming instead of practicing regularly. An intensive week before the test is far less effective than 2 months of daily practice. Your brain needs time to absorb grammar patterns and vocabulary.
  4. Ignoring vocabulary traps. The TOEIC® uses many distractors: similar-sounding words with different meanings, false cognates, and words with multiple meanings depending on context. Build your TOEIC® vocabulary systematically.
  5. Not practicing under real conditions. Doing relaxed exercises at home is very different from taking a timed test in an exam room. Take at least 2-3 practice tests under real conditions before test day.

Recommended Resources

Here are the most effective types of resources for TOEIC® preparation, ranked by priority:

  • TOEIC® practice platform. 990prep offers free TOEIC® exercises with 20-question mini-tests, detailed corrections, and progress tracking. It is the ideal tool for targeted daily practice.
  • English podcasts. Listen to BBC Learning English, NPR News, or professional podcasts to accustom your ear to different accents (American, British, Australian) featured on the TOEIC®. Start with 15 minutes per day.
  • Vocabulary apps. Use spaced repetition tools (flashcards) to memorize TOEIC® business vocabulary. Aim for 10 new words per day.
  • English articles and emails. Read business press articles and professional emails to familiarize yourself with the types of texts found in Part 7.

TOEIC® or TOEFL®: Which Test to Choose?

Many candidates hesitate between the TOEIC® and the TOEFL®. The choice depends on your goal: the TOEIC® is geared toward the professional world, while the TOEFL® is designed for admission to English-speaking universities. For a complete comparison, see our guide TOEIC® or TOEFL®: which one to choose?.

Tips from High Scorers

Here are the habits shared by test-takers who scored 900+ on the TOEIC®:

  • Daily practice without exception. The best results come from regular practice, even if short. 30 minutes a day for 3 months easily beats one intensive week. Create a routine: morning or evening, but every day.
  • Daily English immersion. Beyond exercises, integrate English into your life: change your phone language, listen to podcasts during your commute, watch shows in English without subtitles. This immersion naturally improves your comprehension.
  • Systematic error analysis. Don't just check whether your answer is correct. Understand why you got it wrong and why the correct answer is right. Keep an error log and review it regularly.
  • Simulation under real conditions. Take full practice tests, timed, without breaks. This prepares you mentally and physically for the fatigue of a 2-hour test.
  • Focus on weak points. Identify the parts where you lose the most points and dedicate 60% of your practice time there. A 50-point improvement on your weakest part is often easier than a 10-point gain on your best part.

Every Day of Practice Counts

TOEIC® preparation is a marathon, not a sprint. Every practice session, even a short one, brings you closer to your goal. The most successful candidates are those who start early and practice consistently.

Don't wait until you feel "ready" to begin: the best time to start is now. Take a free mini-test to assess your level, identify your weak points, and launch into a structured preparation plan. With consistency and the right tools, your score will improve week after week.
